The red grape variety comes from the Alsace, Synonyms are Blue Frankentraube, Blue Hartwegstraube, Alsatian, Frankentraube, Grobrot, coarse black, Hartwegstraube, Quille de Coque, Saumoirau, Schwarzgrobe and Schwarzer Hängling. It may not, despite the nicely suggestive synonyms with the variety Tauberschwarz be confused (Blue Hängling, Hartwegstraube). Whether a connection to the variety Poulsard (Quille de Coque) is not known. According to done in 2013 DNA analysis it comes from a presumably natural crossing between Gouais blanc (Heunisch) x unknown variety. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see under molecular Genetics ). The variety was cultivated in Alsace; the former membership of Germany explains the German name.
