Blue Heunisch

The red grape probably comes from Austria, Synonyms include Grosse Kauka, Peterleinstraube, Piazha, Piazhneck, Piazhnek, Plant Madame, Raisin Rouge, Rosary, Sauerschwarz, Schwarzer Heunisch, Sparse Gros, Staatmacher and Thalrot. It is not in spite of the name with the varieties white Heunisch ( Gouais blanc ) or Red Heunisch related. According to DNA analysis it comes from a presumably natural crossing between Feridac x unknown partner. It is a pure female grape, Confusingly, there is also a separate strain Black Heunisch, which is very similar to Gouais Blanc.
