Bodegas Caro

The winery is located in Godoy Cruz in the heart of the Argentinean region of Mendoza. It is a joint venture between the Argentinean wine multinational Catena Zapata and the "Domaines Barons de Rothschild" (to this company of the French branch of the Rothschild family also belongs Château Lafite-Rothschild). Catena contributed its knowledge of the local Malbec and vineyards, DBR its know-how of Cabernet Sauvignon and blending techniques. The exchange of knowledge and the first joint researches were started in 1999. The vineyards cover 55 hectares. The barrique barrels for ageing are produced in DBR's own cooperage in Pauillac. Under the label "Caro" a red wine is produced from Cabernet Sauvignon (65-75%) and Malbec (25-35%). This wine matures for 14 months in 60% new barriques. There are about 4,000 cases of this wine annually. Under the label "Amancaya", a red wine from Malbec (40-60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40-50%) has been produced since 2003, which matures for 11 months in 20% new barriques.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
