The winery is located in Calitzdorp in the district of the same name in the Klein Karoo region of South Africa and is owned by Carel Nel. Viticulture has been practised here since the middle of the 19th century, and brandy has been exported to London since 1860. The vineyards cover 70 hectares about 80 kilometres from the coast at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains. The soils consist of gravelly loam. The red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Shiraz (Syrah) and Pinotage, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Muscadel (Muscat Blanc) and Sauvignon Blanc are cultivated. Due to the hot and dry climate, artificial irrigation has to be used. The farm is mainly known for port-style wines.
