The red grape variety is a new breed between Aramon Noir x Teinturier du Cher. The crossing was made in France in 1829 by Louis Bouschet. The variety is no longer significant; no stocks were recorded in 2016 (Kym Anderson). Gros Bouschet, on the other hand, is a synonym for the Cabernet Franc grape variety.
