One of the largest Greek wine trading houses with headquarters in Thessaloniki in the region of
Macedonia. The company was founded in 1879 by Ioannis Boutaris and is now managed in the fourth generation of the family by Constantine Boutaris and his daughter Marina. Today, it consists of six wineries in
Greece and another one in France. In almost all Greek wine-growing regions there is an ownership of vineyards. The wide range of products includes around 40 labels of country wines and quality wines, including of course the Greek speciality
Retsina. The annual production is around 13 million litres of wine, about half of which is exported to 45 countries worldwide (half of which to Germany).
The main indigenous varieties are Assyrtiko, Agiorgitiko, Moschofilero, Roditis, Xynomavro, the main European standard varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Silvaner and Sauvignon Blanc. Among them are OPAP and OPE wines from the best Greek wine-growing regions such as
Goumenissa,
Crete,
Mantinia,
Naoussa,
Nemea,
Paros and
Santorini, where there are also branches and wineries respectively. An ultra-modern winery called "Domaine Fantaxometocho" (engl. "Monastic Spirit") was opened in 2004 on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the company at Iraklion near the municipality of Skalani. The branded wine "Cava Boutari" is blended from Xynomavro and Agiorgitiko, aged in barrique for one year and another year in the bottle. A top product is the "Grande Reserve Boutari Naoussa" from special Xynomavro grapes, which matures for two years in barriques and two years in the bottle.
