Bouvier Clotar

Clotar Bouvier (1853-1930), born in Weiz in the Austrian province of Styria, owned a vineyard and cultivated vines. However, he saw his life's work in viticulture. He experimented on the family vineyard in Herzogburg and tried to fight phylloxera and mildew. He preferred the rootstock Goethe Rupestris 9, bred by Hermann Goethe (1837-1911), and spread the Bouvier grape variety, later named after him, in Styria, Slovenia and Slovakia. In 1882 Bouvier founded a sparkling wine cellar, which still exists today. The estate in Slovenia was expropriated in 1945 and his son Fritz continued the Styrian part of the estate after the Second World War.
