The English term "brandy wine" originated from the Middle Low German "Brandewīn" and was then shortened to "brandy". According to EU regulations, brandy is now a valid designation for wine brandy produced according to defined rules. In individual countries, there are protected designations such as Armagnac, Cognac or Metaxa. The term brandy is used in many European countries, especially in England, Italy and Spain (such as Brandy de Jerez), but also internationally. See also under brandy and spirits.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
