Breeding number

In the case of a new variety, a letter/number code is assigned by the breeder to clearly identify the new variety. There is no international standard, but in most cases the breeding institute, the breeder and the location of each individual plant (vine line no., stock no. etc.) can be read from it, since several (hundreds of) seeds (kernels) are always placed. A meaningful name is only given after the selection and choice of the "best" plant of a breeding or, if applicable, only after the granted plant variety protection. See also Crossing and Breeding.
