Bugey

The appellation is located in the west of the French wine region Savoy, The former VDQS division was called Vin du Bugey until 1989 and was classified as AOP in 2009. The vineyards cover around 450 hectares of vines in the Ain department. In the Middle Ages the area was part of Burgundy and was an important wine-growing region under the aegis of Roman Catholic monks. The white wine is blended from Chardonnay, Roussette, Aligoté, Mondeuse Blanche, Jacquère, Pinot Gris and Molette. Red wine and rosé consist of Gamay, Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Mondeuse Noire, as well as a maximum of 20% Chardonnay, Roussette, Aligoté, Mondeuse Blanche, Jacquère, Pinot Gris and Molette.

The five municipalities of Cerdon, Machuraz, Manicle, Montagnieu and Virieu-le-Grand can add their names to the Bugey. The name Vin du Bugey Mousseux applies to bottle- fermented sparkling wines and the name Vin du Bugey Pétillant for sparkling wines. In both the municipality of Cerdon can add the name. The name Roussette du Bugey applies to white wines from the Roussette and Chardonnay varieties. The municipalities of Anglefort, Arbignieu, Chanay, Lagnieu, Montagnieu and Virieu-le-Grand may add their names. Well-known producers are Caveau Bugiste and Domaine Monin.
