Burggarten (Winery Ahr)

The estate is located in the district of Heppingen the district town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in the German wine-growing region Ahr, It was founded in 1920 by Peter-Josef Schäfer. Today it is run by his grandson Paul-Josef Schäfer and his wife Gitta, supported by the sons Paul-Michael, Heiko and Andreas. The vineyards cover 15 hectares of vineyards in the layers Castle garden (Heimersheim) Schieferlay and Sonnenberg (Bad Neuenahr) and Ursulinengarten (Ahrweiler). They are planted to 70% with Spätburgunder, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Domina, Dornfelder, Frühburgunder, Merlot, Portuguese, Regent and Zweigelt, and the white varieties Riesling and Pinot Gris. There is also a vineyard property in the location Goldtröpfchen (Piesport) in the growing area Moselle from where Riesling wines are made. It is operated near-natural viticulture with integrated crop protection. Some of the wines are matured in traditional barrels, and the best in years, up to three years in oak barrels. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, spirits (Hefebrand) and grape juice are also produced.
