Burma

Former name (also Burma) of Myanmar; see there.

The Republic of the Union of Myanmar (Burmese ပြည်ထောင်စု သမ္မတ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတေ, Thanmăda Myăma Nainngandaw) in Southeast Asia with the capital Naypyidaw covers 676,578 km². The state was known as Burma until 1989. It borders Thailand, Laos, China, India, Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal in an anti-clockwise direction. Formerly part of British India, the state has been independent since 1948 and has been under military rule since 1962.
