The regional appellation in the western section of the winegrowing region Loire respectively on the left bank of this river includes around 220 communities around the city of Angers. The former VDQS area Vins du Thouarsais was integrated in 2011. Here are produced under many AOC designations red, rosé, white and sparkling wines. The wines from here were already appreciated in the Middle Ages, but then dominated white wines. The vineyards cover about 12,000 hectares of vineyards. The much smaller appellation Saumur lies to the east, whose very similar wines can also be marketed as Anjou (but not vice versa).
