The appellation for red, rosé and white wines is after the city of the same name at the bottom Loire in the west of France named in the department of Maine-et-Loire. It lies between the appellations Anjou (with very similar wines) and Touraine, Saumur is the sparkling wine production center on the Loire and after the Champagne the largest sparkling wine producing area in France. In addition, Saumur is a leader in the production and processing of mushrooms and plays an important role in horticulture. Around 40% of the rose bushes produced in France come from this region. Above the town, perched on a hill, is a tufa castle, built in the 14th century and considered to be the most beautiful of the Loire castles.
