Cabernet Diane

The red grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Cabernet Sauvignon x Norton. It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 2001 in the USA at the University of California in Davis by Lucian W. Dressel. The new Cabernet Doré variety (in this case a white variety) was created with the same parents. This high-yielding vine is resistant to frost and various fungal diseases. It produces dark, merlot-like red wines with soft tannins and aromas of violets and blueberries. In 2016, half a hectare of vine area was designated in the US state of Kentucky (Kym Anderson).
