This red grape variety comes from the island of Sardinia-Italy. Synonyms are Caddeo, Caddiu Nieddu, Caddu, Nieddu Pedra Serra or Nieddu Perda Serra and Pàmpinu. It is possible that the variety mentioned in 1780 under the name Pàmpinu is identical. It was first described ampelographically by Bruno Bruni. However, the identity of the variety has not yet been clearly established. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2010, the variety Nieddu Pedra Serra (this name is also used as a synonym for Caddiu) is identical to the variety Pascale. Whether there is a connection to the white variety Caddiu Bianco is not known. The late-maturing vine is resistant to fungal diseases and frost. It is grown in the province of Cagliari in Sardinia and is usually used as a blend with other local varieties. In 2016, 83 hectares of vines were reported, with a sharp downward trend; in 2000, there were 1,000 hectares (Kym Anderson statistics).
