Caffeine

The substance belonging to the alkaloids (also caffeine, theine) belongs to the psychotropic (affecting the human psyche) substances from the group of stimulants. In its pure form it appears as a white, odourless, crystalline powder with a bitter taste. Caffeine is the stimulating component of cola (Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola etc.), coffee, tea and energy drinks and is also used to flavour wine-based drinks (not wine) or by using cola in mixed wine drinks. Above 150 mg/l this must be declared on the label by the statement "increased caffeine content". See also ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake).

Andreas Essl

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
