Caña

Term for a narrow, tall, cylindrical wine cup used in Andalusia in Spain, from which Manzanilla (a variant of the Sherry ) is drunk. The word means bamboo and is probably derived from the special one used here Venencia (Scoop), the stem of which is made of this wood (instead of whalebone or silver as in Jerez). The term may refer to the tavern usage "cantar a las cañas (de vino)", which means "singing to the wine glasses". The Caña is also a Spanish song form (Palo) of flamenco. In this context, the term is said to be due to the use of bamboo canes as a percussion instrument, which are used like castanets. The typical sherry glass, however, is called Catavino, See also under wine vessels and wine glasses,
