DOC area for red and rose wines in the Italian region Sardinia, The poet Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938) gave the wine from Oliena the name "Nepente" after the opium-like intoxicant of the ancient Greeks. The zone covers the entire island. The Classico area includes the province of Nuoro (with Ogliastra). There are three subzones, the most label may be cited. The Capo Ferrato subzone comprises the municipalities of Castiadas, Muravera, San Vito, Villaputzu and Villasimius in the province of Cagliari. The Jerzu subzone comprises the municipalities of Cardedu and Jerzu in the province of Nuoro. The subzone Oliena or Nepente di Oliena comprises the municipality of Oliena and a part of Orgosolo in the province of Nuoro.

The wines must have at least 85%, those from the Classico area at least 90% of the Cannonau variety ( Garnacha Tinta ), up to a maximum of 15% other approved varieties are possible. There are the types of wine Rosso, Rosso Riserva, Rosato. Passito. Liquoroso and Classico,
