Cardinal

The red grape variety is a new breeding between Ribier (Alphonse Lavallée) x Queen of the Vineyards. Synonyms are Apostoliatiko, Cardenal, Cardinal Crveni, Francesa, G 10-30, Karaburnu Rannii, Cardinal and Rannii Carabournu. The parentage Ahmeur Bou Ahmeur (Flame Tokay) x Ribier given in the breeding list turned out to be false in DNA analyses carried out in 2009. The cross was made in 1943 in California by Elmer Snyder and F. Harmon. It was a crossing partner of the new varieties Alba, Arkadia, Blanc Du Bois, Carina (2), Carla, Corredera, Diana (2), Dunav, Flame Seedless, Isa, Kishmish Luchistyi, Ora, Prima (1), Sugraone, Zagore and Zhemchuzhina Oskhi. An early maturing mutation is Cardinal Early.

Cardinal - Weintraube und Blatt

This early-maturing, high-yielding vine is susceptible to both powdery mildew and botrytis, and is also sensitive to frost. As table grape it is used in large quantities in Bulgaria (~2,000 ha), Italy (~4,000 ha), Romania (~4,000 ha) and Spain (~6,000 ha). The worldwide population is estimated at about 30,000 hectares. However, Cardinal is also used as a wine grape. Cultivation areas in this regard exist in the countries Argentina (2 ha), France (202 ha), Croatia, Mexico (168 ha), Moldova (473 ha), Morocco (624 ha), Austria, Peru (53 ha), Serbia (3 ha), Spain (14 ha) and Tunisia (121 ha). In 2016, a total of 1,660 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
