Carl Loewen

The "Carl Loewen Riesling vineyard" is located in the community of Leiwen (Bernkastel area) in the German wine-growing region Moselle, It is run by Karl Josef Loewen. An important step in 1982 was the acquisition of vineyards from the winery Imperial Count von Kesselstatt able Laurentiuslay. In early 2008, the winery Carl Schmitt-Wagner (Longuich) was taken over with 1.4 hectares of vineyards in Maximiner Herrenberg. This vineyard was planted in 1896 by Carl Schmitt-Wagner and still stands today in the original. With a dense planting of 10,000 sticks / ha with over 100 years old rootless Riesling vines in traditional Moselle pile education, this vineyard is a vinological cultural monument. The vineyards cover a total of 12.5 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers hero (Pölich), monastery garden and Laurentiuslay (Leiwen), Maximiner Klosterlay (Detzem), Ritsch (Thörnich), as well as in the mentioned Maximiner Herrenberg (Longuich).

To 95% of the Riesling is cultivated, the small remainder consists of a third of acres of Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau. It will be near-natural viticulture with, for example, natural greening and abandonment of mineral fertilization practiced. To exploit the great potential of the vineyards, Loewen goes unconventional ways. "My goal is not to make little wine from a few grapes, but from many grapes little wine". This is achieved with some very old vines and low-yielding, small-berry Riesling clones. The expansion is based on a controlled, slow fermentation with natural yeasts. The wines are mostly aged in classic wood-based. Layers are only mentioned on the label if the terroir is clearly recognizable. A top class dry Riesling is vinified by specially selected 500 sticks under the name "Varidor". Other premium wines are "Riesling Old Vines" from at least 40-year-old vines, and "Riesling Leiwener Laurentiuslay Old Vines" from partly rootless vines. In appropriate years, an ice wine is produced.
