Producer description of "Ferruccio Carlotto"

The "Ferruccio Carlotto" winery is located in the municipality of Auer (Ora) in the Alto Adige area of the Italian region of Adige. Umberto Carlotto began growing grapes in 1940 as a sharecropper (mezzadro) on the Schloßhof estate near the Caldif ruins in Mazon, where he worked the vineyards for 50 years with his brother and later also with son Ferruccio. Ferruccio Carlotto became self-employed in 2000, and his daughter Michela is responsible for the cellar and vinification. The vineyards cover 1.6 hectares in Mazzon (mainly Pinot Noir and some Vernatsch), as well as just under one hectare in Auer (Lagrein). The wines are produced as DOC South Tyrolean. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation takes place in new and used barriques as well as large wooden barrels, where the wine is also aged for 12 months. This is followed by levelling in steel tanks and large wooden barrels, a further six months of storage and then bottling. Only after several months of storage are the wines marketed. Around 20,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of .
