Carrega Tinto

The red grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Grossa, Tinta Grossa and Tinta Grossa d'Alentejo. It must not be confused with the varieties Grossa, Marufo or Tinta Barroca (all with the synonym Tinta Grossa), despite morphological similarities or the apparent synonym. Nothing is known about a possible genetic link to the white variety Carrega Branco. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Hebén x Alfrocheiro. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular genetics). A cross between Marufo x Carrega Tinto gave rise to the variety Preto Martinho. The variety is grown in the Trás-os-Montes area. In 2016, 17 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
