DOC area (also Carso-Kras) for red and white wines in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia on the border to Slovenia, The area includes the municipalities of Duino-Aurisina, Monrupino, Muggia, San Dorligo della Valle, Sgonico and Trieste in the province of Trieste, and the municipalities of Doberdò del Lago, Fogliano Redipuglia, Monfalcone, Ronchi dei Legionari, Sagrado and Savogna d'Isonzo in the Province of Goriziano (Gorizia). The area stretches along the Adriatic coast on the Gulf of Trieste, from the north adjacent DOC area Collio Goriziano to the Croatian peninsula of Istria in the south. From the hilly, karst plateau, the name Carso is derived. The climate is characterized by mild summers and cold winds of the dreaded east wind Bora.

On the label the names Carso or Carso-Kras may be given in Italian or Slovenian. The varietal wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety, maximum 15% may be other approved varieties. The reds are Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and (at this 70%) Terrano, The white wines are Chardonnay. Glera, Malvasia (Malvasia Istriana = Malvasia Istarska ), Pinot Grigio ( Pinot gris ), Sauvignon ( Sauvignon Blanc ) Traminer and Vitovska, a Riserva with longer maturation before marketing, there are of the wine types Malvasia, Sauvignon, Vitovska, Rosso, Merlot, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Terrano and Terrano Clascico.

The wine type Terrano Classico is made from at least 70% Terrano. This is only allowed to be produced in the Classic area (which is part of the municipalities of Duino-Aurisiana, Monrupino, Sgonico and Trieste), where it is the iron-rich type of soil Terra Rossa gives. This one in Slovenian as Teran designated soil extends across the border to Slovenia, where the similar red wine Kras Teran from the variety named as Refošk. According to a no longer verifiable hypothesis, Terrano / Refošk could be a descendant of the species used for the Pliny the Elder (23-79) mentioned ancient wine Pucinum has been used.
