Cascarolo Bianco

The white grape variety comes from Italy. Synonyms are Cascarala, Cascarecul and Cascarelbo. It should not be confused with the Hungarian variety Fehér Gohér(White Augster), as the German pomologist Hermann Goethe (1837-1911) had suspected. It is a very old variety from Piedmont. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2007, it is a descendant of the Rèze variety and closely related to Erbaluce. Once widely distributed in north-western Italy, the variety is almost extinct; no population was recorded in 2016 (statistics Kym Anderson).
