The red grape variety (also Cascudo) originates from Portugal. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it is probably a natural cross between Alfrocheiro x Cayetana Blanca. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular genetics). Despite seemingly indicating synonyms or morphological similarities, it must not be confused with its numerous sibling varieties (see under Cayetana Blanca). The variety is grown in the Portuguese areas of Douro and Península de Setúbal, where it is used as a blending partner. In 2016, 269 hectares of vines were declared (Kym Anderson statistics).

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
