The huge French trading company with its headquarters in Bordeaux was founded in 1949 by four brothers of the Castel family. The president is Pierre Castel. The company plays an important role in the Bordeaux wine trade, but is also active in France in the trade with cellar and wine growing technology. In addition to the main wine segment, the product portfolio also includes a beer brand and various soft drinks. Through numerous takeovers and participations from the early 1990s onwards, it has become one of the largest wine trading companies in the world. In 1992 the company La Sociéte des Vins de France was acquired, in 1998 the Nicolas retail chain, in 1999 the Domaines Virginie in the Languedoc and finally in 2002 the English retail chain Oddbins.

The company also owns some 15 châteaux in Bordeaux and Provence with a total of several thousand hectares of vineyards. These include Château d'Arcins, Château Barreyres, Château Beychevelle (since 2011, ownership shared with the Japanese company Suntory), Château Bousquet, Château Ferrande, Château Montlabert and Château Tour Prignac. There is also a joint venture with the great Chinese wine multinational Yantai Changyu, where Chinese wines are produced and French vines are marketed. Around 500 million bottles of wine are sold annually in over 80 countries on all five continents. Since 2006, the German company Racke in Bingen(Rhineland-Palatinate) has been a sales partner in Germany. See also under Globalization and the world's largest wine companies.
