Castel Sallegg

The estate is located in the municipality of Kaltern (Caldaro) in the Italian wine sector South-Tirol (Region Trentino-Alto Adige ). In 1851 the castle near Bozen was acquired by Archduke Rainer of Austria (1827-1913), Viceroy of Lombardy-Veneto, and became the property of the Counts of Kuenburg through succession. Today the sixth generation of the estate is managed by Georg Graf von Kuenburg. The vineyards cover 31 hectares of vineyards in the best locations around Lake Kaltern, some with vines up to 50 years old. The white varieties Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Moscato Giallo as well as the red varieties Lagrein, Rosenmuskateller (Moscato Rosa), Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Vernatsch and Merlot are cultivated. A specialty is the one that is particularly well-kept here Rosenmuskateller, because Prince Heinrich von Campofranco brought some vines from his Sicilian possessions. As a family heritage, it is treasured and only produced in limited quantities. It is consistently close to nature, environmentally friendly cultivation and only grapes from their own locations are used for the production of the wines. The expansion takes place three floors underground in the historical cellar, depending on the type of wine, in large oak barrels or in barriques. Among other things, wines from the DOC areas South Tyrol and Kalterersee produced.
