Producer description of "Castello di Fonterutoli"

The winery is located in the municipality of Fonterutoli south of Castellina in the Chianti-Classico area of Tuscany. According to legend, the municipality of Fonterutoli played an important role in the creation of the Chianti region. The winery has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1453. A famous ancestor was the doctor Filippo Mazzei (1730-1816), who emigrated to Virginia, where he became a neighbour and friend of US President Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) and played an important role in the War of Independence. Today, a Cabernet Sauvignon wine bearing his likeness is produced as a tribute.

Lapo Mazzei was president of the "Consorzio del Marchio Storico Chianti Classico" for many years (see Gallo nero). Today, the business is run by Filippo and Francesco Mazzei. The vineyards cover around 70 hectares of vines. They have specialised in a few types of wine. The main wines are "Chianti Classico Fonterutoli" and the "Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Fonterutoli", which was first produced in 1995, as well as the IGT red wine"Siepi", which is matured in barriques. The latter comes from the top vineyard of the same name and is a blend of the Sangiovese and Merlot varieties. In Montebottigli-Grosseto in the Tuscan Maremma region, the family established the Tenuta Belguardo winery.
