Castiglione

The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Alicante Barletta, Calabrese, Castiglione di Bova, Castiglione di Guarnacciato, Castigliono, Greco, Mantonico Nero, Marchesana, Nerello di Egua, Zagarese and Zagarolese. It should not be confused with the Greco N ero, Magliocco Canino, Magliocco Dolce or Nerello Cappuccio (Castiglione) varieties because of seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities. The late-ripening vine is mostly used in blends with the varieties Gaglioppo, Nocera and Prunesta. It is grown almost exclusively in Calabria, where it is permitted in the DOC wine Bivongi. Small quantities are also found in Campania. In 2016, however, only four hectares of vines were reported, with a sharp downward trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
