Castor

The white grape variety (also Geilweilerhof B 7-2) is an interspecific new variety between Oberlin 595 (Oberlin Noir) x Foster's White Seedling. The name is derived from a star of the constellation Gemini. It contains genes from Vitis riparia and Vitis vinifera. With the same parents also the new breed Pollux was created: The hybrid was crossed in 1944 by the breeder Dr. Bernhard Husfeld (1900-1970) at the vine breeding institute Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen (Pfalz). The vine is resistant to fungal diseases. It yields wines with strawberry aroma or Foxton. In 2016 no stocks were recorded (statistics Kym Anderson).
