The Spanish DO area is in the region Catalonia, It used to be part of the area Penedès and was only launched in 2001 at the instigation of the famous oenologist and winery owner Miguel A. Torres (* 1941) classified. The vineyards cover 3,600 hectares of vineyards. The area is divided into two geographically separate zones. The first zone is the triangle Tarragona in the south, Barcelona in the northeast and Lleida in the northwest and the second zone is north of Girona, right on the border France at the foot of the Pyrenees.
