The cooperative is located in the municipality of Capçanes in the northern Spanish region of Catalonia. It was founded in 1933 by five families. For about 50 years, the yields were sold to other companies as cask wines, and from 1980 onwards, all cellar technology was discontinued and only the grapes were marketed. In 1995 they started to produce kosher wine for the Jewish community in Barcelona and therefore invested in cellars and equipment. After his studies in Geisenheim, the German oenologist Jürgen Wagner visited the cooperative one year later and was hired as the person responsible for cellar technology and marketing. And with that the big change began. Pere Pelleja is responsible as managing director.

Celler de Capçanes - Weinberge

The vineyards cover a total of 280 hectares of vineyards at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level in the province of Tarragona, divided into many small plots. The red varieties Garnacha Tinta, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Samsó(Mazuelo), Tempranillo and Pinot Noir are cultivated, as well as the white varieties Carignan Blanc, Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo. The product range includes around 25 different wines, which are aged in steel tanks, wooden barrels or barriques, depending on the type of wine. Under the DO designations Catalunya and Montsant, red wines, white wines, rosé wines and traditional fortified wines are produced. There are also organic wines produced according to ecological guidelines and bag-in-box wines filled in cardboard containers. The flagship is the red wine "Cabrida", matured for 12 months in new French barriques. It is made from Garnacha Tinta vines up to over 100 years old with extremely low yields of only 15 to 18 hl/ha. The wines are exported to 40 countries. Olive oil with the brand name "Mas Donis" is also produced.
