Cerceal Branco

The white grape comes from Portugal, Synonyms are Cercial, Cercial do Douro and Serceal. Despite seemingly indicative synonyms or morphological and name similarities she must not with the varieties Jampal or Sercial (Esgana Cão) be confused. There are some varieties with different spellings. These are partly independent varieties. According to the years 2006 and 2007 DNA analysis there are the following findings (attention to "e" and "i" in the name):

  • Cerceal Branco of Dão: same as Cercial in Bairrada and Cercial do Douro
  • Cercial of Bairrada: crossing between Malvasia Fina x Sercial
  • Cercial of Madeira (often called Sercial): identical to Esgana Cão (Sercial)
  • Cercial by Pinhel: identical to Jampal
  • Cerceal and Cerceal de Jaes: Synonyms for Sercial

The late-ripening vine is very prone to fake mildew, to a lesser extent for Botrytis and powdery mildew. It produces fresh, acidic white wines mainly for the blend, which also serve for sparkling wine production. The variety is mainly in the area Douro but also in the fields Alentejo. Bairrada. dão and Tejo grown. The Portuguese acreage in 2010 was 379 hectares.
