Château Couhins

Producer description of "Château Couhins"

The vineyard is located in the commune of Villenave-d'Ornon in the Pessac-Léognan area of Graves (Bordeaux). It was bought by the INRA from the Gasqueton and Hanappier families in 1968 to carry out viticultural research. The vineyards cover 14 hectares, of which ten hectares are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and four hectares with Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Only the white wine is classified as "Cru Classé" in the Graves area. It is blended in equal parts from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Until the end of the 1970s, all of the wine was produced by André Lurton (1924-2019), who had been the tenant before the INRA purchase. INRA then took the business into its own hands. Lurton acquired part of the vineyards in 1967 and founded Château Couhins-Lurton.
