The vineyard is located in the town of Saint-Émilion in the area of the same name (Bordeaux). The vineyard is one of the oldest in Saint-Émilion; Clotte means "little cave". The oldest owners are said to be the de Grailly family. In 1912, Archambault Marquis de Grailly sold the estate to Sylvain Chailleau. His son George Chailleau (1896-1973) took over in 1931 and founded one of the first post-war wine brotherhoods. Today, the estate is owned by "Héritiers Chailleau" (Héritiers = heirs; these are the three granddaughters). It is run by the Moueix family empire, which receives three quarters of the yield in return for the cultivation and vinification. The rest is sold in the "Logis de la Cadène" restaurant in Saint-Émilion, which is also part of the estate. The estate is classified as a Grand Cru Classé, which was last confirmed in 2012. The vineyards cover four hectares of vines planted with Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Franc (30%). The long-lasting red wine is matured for 12 months in barriques.
