Château Lumière

The winery is located near Katsunuma in the Yamanashi area to the west of Tokyo in Japan. The owner, Toshihiko Tsukamoto, comes from a Japanese family with a winemaking tradition. His great-grandfather Tokuyoshi Furuya is considered a wine-growing pioneer. Tsukamoto's grandfather Komanosuke Furuya founded the Koshu-en winery in 1885, which subsequently covered 28 hectares of vineyards. During the US occupation after the Second World War (1939-1945), 27 hectares were confiscated. The current owner, Toshihiko Tsukamoto, studied economics and then learnt viticulture at the University of California, among other places. He began rebuilding Koshu-en in the mid-1960s and gave the winery its current name.

The vineyards cover 16 hectares of vines. They are planted with the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Tannat, Tempranillo, Mills, Black Queen and Muscat Bailey A, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Delaware and the historical variety Koshu, which is cultivated in the Tanazukuri system. Most of the vines come from Château Margaux, the Riesling from Schloss Johannisberg The red wines are vinified in the Bordeaux style. The white wines are blends, mostly based on Koshu. These are vinified sweet in the Japanese style. Around 100,000 bottles of wine are produced each year. The estate's own shop sells wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux, e.g. Château Cheval Blanc, Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Haut-Brion.
