Château Peyre-Lebade

The winery is located in the commune of Listrac-Médoc in the area of the same name in the Médoc (Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux). The name derives from the soil and means "erect stone", referring to a dolmen (prehistoric building of the megalithic culture). There is also an old limestone quarry in this area. Vines were first cultivated here by Cistercians as early as the 12th century. In 1835, the estate was acquired by Bertrand Redon. This was the father of the famous French painter Odilon Redon (1840-1916), who created his most famous works on the estate. After a period of decline, the property was bought in 1979 by Baron Edmond Adolphe de Rothschild (1926-1997), who had already acquired the two neighbouring estates Château Clarke and Château Malmaison in 1973. The vineyards were drained and replanted, the buildings renovated and extended. After the death of his father in 1997, the estate became the property of Baron Benjamin de Rothschild (1963-2021). The red wine is made from Merlot (75%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). It matures for 12 to 16 months in barriques.
