Département in the southeast of France with the capital Bourges, named after the left tributary of the Loire with the same name. As with all 14 départements of the large Loire area, the name of the département can be added to the name of the regional IGP area Val de Loire.
80% of the white wines are made from the main varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, as well as Grolleau Gris, Pinot Gris, Melon de Bourgogne, Folle Blanche and Arbois Blanc(Menu Pineau). The red and rosé wines are produced from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Pineau d'Aunis and Merlot. The rosé wines are partly light in the manner of a Vin gris also from white wine varieties (Gris).
The oak wood from the oak forests around the capital Bourges is used for the production of barrique barrels. The wood is considered to be fine fibrous and produces wines with mild tannins.
