The red grape variety (also Kalloniatiko) comes from Greece
, It is not yet clear whether it is a separate variety; appropriate DNA analysis
are still open (as of 2013). The medium to late-ripening vine is generally resistant to disease. The ones on the island Lesbos
cultivated variety became almost completely through the 1950's phylloxera
eradicated. It was reactivated in 1985 by a single producer. In 2010, 60 hectares were planted again.
