Chisago

The red grape variety (also KP 13) is an interspecific new variety between St. Croix x Swenson Red. It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis cinerea, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed by the two private breeders Kevin and Kyle Peterson at their winery in the city of Chisago City near Minneapolis, Minnesota. The plant variety protection was granted in 2008. The vine is generally resistant to disease and extremely frost hardy down to minus 40 °Celsius. It produces fruity, deep dark red wines with soft tannins and fruity aromas of cherries, raspberries and blackberries. These also have the potential for ice wine. The variety is cultivated in Minnesota, among other places. In 2016, however, no stocks were reported (Kym Anderson).
