Clos des Papes

The winery is located in the municipality Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the eponymous area in the southern Rhône Valley. It has been owned by the Avril family for around 300 years. Today it is run by Paul Avril, who is assisted by his son Vincent. The vineyards cover 32 hectares of vineyards. They are the red varieties Grenache Noir (70%), Mourvèdre (20%), Counoise, Muscardin, Syrah and Vaccarèse, and planted with the white varieties Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Roussanne. The red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced with an extreme yield restriction of around 18 hl / ha. It develops at the earliest after six to ten years and is extremely storable. The two French presidents Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970) and Georges Pompidou (1911-1974) counted this Châteauneuf-du-Pape as theirs favorite wines,
