Clos St Thomas

The winery in the municipality of Kab Elias in Lebanon was founded in 1997 by Said Touma. Labib Kalls is the cellar master. It was named after a chapel dedicated to St Thomas, which is located in the middle of the vineyards. The hillside vineyards cover 20 hectares of vineyards planted with the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan Noir (Mazuelo), CinsautCinsaut, Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Merlot, Syrah, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Clairette, Grenache Blanc (Garnacha Blanca), Muscat d'Hamburg and Ugni Blanc (Trebbiano). The name part Clos possibly refers to vineyards surrounded by a wall, which is particularly common in French Burgundy.

The first vintage was 1998. The wines are called "Les Gourmets" in Rouge (Cinsaut, Carignan, Grenache Noir), Rosé (like Rouge) and Blanc (Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc), "Les Emirs" (Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Carignan), "Les Sultans" (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah), "Tradition" (Cinsaut, Grenache Noir), as well as the fortified sweet wines "Délice des Moines" (Grenache Noir) and "Le Miel du Clos" (Muscat d'Hamburg). They mature in a natural cellar, which is cut into the rock to a depth of 20 metres. Around 300,000 bottles of wine are produced each year, 80% of which are exported.
