Colombaud

The white grape variety originates from France. Synonyms are Aubié, Aubier, Aubier Franc Blanc, Blanquette de Lavilledieu, Bouteillan, Bouteillan Blanc, Brachet, Colombeau, Couloumbaou, Couloumbat Blanc, Coumbeau and Colombaud du Var. It must not be confused with the Colombard variety because of the similarity in name. The vine was first mentioned in writing in 1623 as Colombaux near Avignon on the southern Rhône, and in 1715 by the botanist Pierre-Joseph Garidel (1658-1737). The variety has a morphological similarity to Bouteillan Noir, but it is not a colour mutation. DNA analyses carried out in 2011 established a parent-offspring relationship with the Valais variety Humagne Blanche. The late-ripening vine is susceptible to botrytis. It is cultivated in very small quantities in the Var department (Provence). No stock was recorded in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
