Condado de Huelva

The only valid for white wines DO is located on the Atlantic coast in the southern Spanish region Andalusia near the Portuguese border. The vineyards cover around 6,000 hectares of vineyards and are located at 25 meters above sea level just above the sea level. There is plenty of rainfall. With 80% of the total area, the autochthonous white variety clearly dominates Zalema, Other white varieties are Palomino (the main sherry grape), Garrido Fino, Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez. In the 16th century, the area was the main supplier of wines to the newly discovered South American colonies. In the 17th century, the wine was then used in large quantities for the production of Sherry in the neighboring, southeast Jerez delivered (which is not allowed anymore). Today, sherry types Fino and Oloroso produce similar wines in a solera process. Other products are Jovens (young wines) and Rancios, Experimenting is increasingly with many red wines, such as the Monastrell.
