Corino Lorenzo

The Italian agronomist and viticulturalist Lorenzo Corino (1947-2021) graduated in agricultural sciences in Rome in 1972. He then worked as a research assistant at the Experimental Station for Cereal Cultivation in Rome. Thanks to a scholarship, he then worked at the Plant Breeding Institute of Cambridge (Great Britain) in connection with resistance in cereals. After returning to Italy, he first worked at the Experimental Station for Cereal Crops and then moved to the Experimental Station for Viticulture in Conegliano (Veneto). He carried out extensive research activities at Italian and European universities. This was done in close cooperation with Italian associations, producers and institutions. Within the framework of study projects, many trips took him to France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, Chile, South Africa, Great Britain and the USA..

Lorenzo Corino was a fifth generation winemaker in Costigliole d'Asti. He was also the author and co-author of more than 90 publications in technical-scientific areas of the wine sector. Among other things, he was a member of the Italian Academy of Vine and Wine. He was director of the Centre for Research in Viticulture (CRA-ENO) in Asti from 2009 to 2012 and has been in charge of viticulture at Fattoria La Maliosa since January 2013. Since his early professional years, he has been committed to sustainable agriculture that adapts to its environment. For decades, he has been calling for a rethink (not only) in Italian viticulture, in which traditional practices, autochthonous grape varieties, the use of renewable energies and also the health of farm workers should be taken into account. Corino also ran a blog on natural wine based on a definition with six rules for this term, which is not regulated by any legislation.
