Designation for a sparkling wine from the DO area Penedès (name only applies to still wines) or Cava. The artificial word is composed of COR (heart - referring to the origin of Spanish sparkling wines in the heart of the Cava region, which were "invented" here), PINNA (etymological origin of the word Penedès "pinnae") and NAT (born).
In other words, the name means "born in the heart of the Penedès". It is not a DO area, but a so-called European collective trademark. The association "Associació de Viticultors i Elaboradors CORPINNAT" (AVEC) comprises the nine Catalan sparkling wine producers Can Feixes Huguet, Celler Mas Candi, Gramona, Júlia Bernet, Llopart, Nadal, Recaredo, Sabaté i Coca and Torelló. After a lengthy dispute with the Cava Association, they have now been using the trademarked designation CORPINNAT for their products instead of Cava since 2017.
The CORPINNAT sparkling wines are 100% artisan sparkling wines of the premium class. Only the approved grape varieties from organically certified vineyards may be used. The traditional grape varieties Macabeo, Garnacha, Monastrell, Parellada, Malvasia/Subirat (Alarije), Sumoll, Xarello and the mutation Xarello Rosado are permitted. The maximum yield is limited to 12,000 kilograms/hectare; in irrigated areas to only 8,000 kilograms/hectare.
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
