Côte

French term (also Côtes or Coteaux, in German "Hang") for vineyards in mostly a pronounced hillside location with abundant sunlight and optimal exposure. In France, this is often included in appellation designations, for example Coteaux Champenois, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, Coteaux Varois en Provence, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits, Côte Chalonnaise, Côte Rôtie, Côtes de Provence, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône-Villages and Côtes du Roussillon. However, vineyards with flatter sites can also be found in the corresponding areas. Other designations for qualitatively outstanding areas are Climat, Clos, Cru and Lieu-dit.
