The appellation is located around the town of Boën-sur-Lignon, east of the Saint-Pourçain area, on the upper course of the Loire in central France. It was classified as VDQS in 1955 and as AOC in 2001. The vineyards cover 200 hectares of vineyards in 21 communes. The red and rosé wines are produced from Gamay (similar to Beaujolais).
