Crovassa

The red grape variety originates from the border region Italy/Switzerland. Synonyms are Croassa, Croassera, Crova Nera and Crovassa Nera. The parentage (parental town) is unknown. According to DNA analyses done in 2011, there is no genetic relationship to the many other local varieties in the Aosta Valley. Similarities with the Nebbiolo variety suggest an origin in Piedmont. In Switzerland, it is counted among the grape variety group Old Growths. The late-maturing, vigorous vine is threatened with extinction. It is cultivated in the Italian Aosta Valley mainly in the two communes of Donnas and Issogne and is used as a blending grape. In 2016, 0.3 hectares of vines were designated (Kym Anderson).
